Teachers

There are currently 33 teachers at the School of Sociology, including 9 professors and 14 associate professors; 85% of teachers have obtained a doctoral degree. They have formed a teaching and research team with young and middle-aged doctors.

Students

There are currently has more than 600 students at the School of Sociology, including more than 70 doctoral students, more than 200 master students, and more than 300 undergraduates.

Subject Characteristics

The main directions of Rural Sociology and Political Sociology are: the operation of grassroots political power in the transition period of China, the construction of political social order, the relationship between grassroots politics and macro-political system, the social local experience and its academic significance in the transition period of China, the institutionalized regional differences and assessments of policies relating to agriculture, rural areas and rural people, and the focus on policy services and social experiments.

The main directions of social culture and social psychology are the cultural and psychological characteristics and problems of different types of people in the process of social transformation in China, and the changes, collisions, and integration of minority cultures.

The main directions of population and social issues are the basic theories of social issues, China's population policy, the gender ratio of the birth population, engineering immigration and other social problems during the transition period.

The main directions of welfare sociology are the characteristics and social foundation of social security policies in various countries in the world, and the theory and policy practice of social welfare disciplines and social security in the transition period of China.

Characteristics of theoretical perspectives, research paradigms, and research methods:

Focus on the dialogue between different disciplines, theories, and paradigms in the same research field among sociology, demography, social anthropology, political science, psychology, etc., to form the intersection and integration of disciplinary research, and to adhere to the orientation of empirical research.

In September 1996, the Social Investigation and Research Center of Huazhong University of Science and Technology was established.

Social Worker Laboratory

The social work laboratory adopts the TV monitoring-aided teaching system. It is an experimental system that integrates modern multimedia technology as an auxiliary teaching method on the basis of traditional teaching. It is one of the most advanced standard social work laboratories in China. There are two group working laboratories, one family work laboratory, two casework laboratories, one large observation room, and one multimedia classroom. Five experiments can be carried out at the same time. The experiment process can be recorded, edited, switched, played and stored in real-time, and can accommodate 40 students for on-site teaching experiments. The use of the laboratory enables the social work profession to combine professional theories, methods, skills with static simulation environment and dynamic reality environment in the education and training, to realize the combination of theory and practice, and becomes an important part of cultivating high-level talents in social work. It has laid a solid material foundation for the establishment of an excellent social work talents training model and scientific research environment system integrating professionalism, innovation, and leading. The laboratory also has the functions of social psychology, mental health education, and counseling, and undertakes the work of mental health education and counseling for college students.

Professional Computer Lab

Combined with the characteristics of the school, the lab has installed a variety of software suitable for students to use, such as SPSS, Foxpro, etc., so that the school students have a professional base for processing questionnaires and data. The data processing work of a series of large-scale questionnaires has been carried out, which greatly facilitated the computer teaching of graduate students. The lab has also undertaken the teaching tasks of undergraduates and postgraduates in courses such as the use of computer statistical software.

Telephone Survey Laboratory

With the use of the most advanced technology of international scientific research, the school of Sociology has built a telephone survey system which is on the leading level in China, providing a shared platform for the study of sociology and other disciplines in social sciences and humanities, and providing advanced conditions for professional training.

School Archive Room

The archive room has more than 14,000 professional books in Chinese, more than 700 books in foreign languages, and more than 100 periodicals. There are also 104 books donated by the Keswick Foundation to provide quality services and guarantees for teachers and students in teaching and research.
