HUST’s academic year begins in the autumn. For graduates and scholars, the university offers admissions both for the spring and autumn semesters. Please note the following important dates:

 

Admission timeline

2019-2020 Spring Admission:November 15th, 2019 to January 15th, 2020 

2020-2021 Autumn Admission: March 15th to July 15th, 2020

The Spring Semester will start from February and the Autumn Semester from September.

 

Procedures

       If you want to get the admission qualification of the school of Sociology of Huazhong University of science and technology, the following is the specific procedure:


1. Login the online application system http://admission.hust.edu.cn/ and upload the required documents and submit your application. The documents required are as follows:

(1) One photocopy of your passport

(2) An official certificate of your highest education

(3) Transcripts of your highest education

(4) Personal statement/CV

(5) Study and research plan in China

(6) Two Recommendation Letters from professors/associate professors

(7) Introduction of personal scientific research achievements Applicants for a doctorate must submit)

(8) Language Proficiency certificate (English native speakers are exempted for English-medium programs)

(9) Financial Certification (certificate of deposit for 5,000 USD or above)

(10) Physical Examination Report

(11) Certificate of Non-criminal Record

      *Note that all certificates or Diploma issued in the third language should be notarized in Chinese or English editions.

2. Reviewed by the school of international education: The school of International Education will examine your passport to see if you meet the international student status; the school of International Education will comprehensively review whether the application materials you submitted are true and complete, and whether your scores meet the minimum admission requirements; the school of International Education will report the qualified personnel to Wuhan entry exit administration bureau and the Ministry of education for verification. Applicant fails to pass any of the above steps, you will be rejected directly.

3. Departmental investigation: If you successfully pass the above verification, the school of International Education will transfer your application materials to the school of Sociology for academic assessment, which is in the form of remote video interview. After the assessment, the school of Sociology will report the admission opinions (including the instructor information you choose) to the school of International Education.

4. The school of International Education will inform you of the pre-admission letter.

5. Scholarship recommendation and evaluation: Within the specified time, The school of Sociology will submit the list of international students to be funded this year to the school of International Education, which will organize the international student scholarship Review Committee to review the proposed personnel.

6. Admission: According to the assessment results of international student scholarship, the school of International Education will inform you of the official admission and funding information, and make admission materials at the same time.

Qualifications

1. Applicants for Master’s degree must have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree and be under the age of 35.

2. Master degree applicants should be a full-time undergraduate student of a high-quality university or a high-level major.

3. Applicants must have good English skills. Priority is given to applicants who have achieved good grades in TOEFL, IELTS or other officially recognized exams and have obtained a language proficiency certificate.

Language Proficiency

Chinese medium Programs:

HSK 4 or above for medical, engineering, science, economics, management, law and Education programs

HSK 5 or above for Chinese literature, history, philosophy, sociology programs.

English medium Programs: 

Good command of English; TOEFL, GRE, IELTS or other official recognized test holders are preferred

 

Subject assessment

The International Student Assessment Team of our college (composed of 5-7 teachers from various disciplines to conduct examinations on the candidates who passed the qualification examination. The assessment is divided into the examination of the actual applicants ability of foreign languages and their comprehensive ability of scientific research.

All aspects of the assessment must be carried out in a standardized examination room. Candidates who are unable to arrive to the examination room can be interviewed by video. The assessment process should be strictly recorded and video recorded for future reference.

Subject assessment is divided into foreign language ability assessment (20%) and scientific research comprehensive ability assessment (80%).

The comprehensive assessment method of scientific research is interview. Candidates introduce their basic situation, the results of the master's program, their existing research foundation, their proposed research plan for the duration of the master's degree program for no more than 15 minutes.  The comprehensive interview of the admissions committee is about 15 minutes, mainly to examine the research ability and comprehensiveness of the candidate’s potential. Examiners score candidates without a name.

Master Training Program

1.Training Target

Cultivating disciplinary professionals with innovative ability to independently engage in scientific research, teaching, and management.

Specific requirements are as follows:

1Have ideals, strong ability to innovate, high comprehensive quality; have a rigorous and realistic scientific attitude and a strict standard of academic excellence.

2Have a solid theoretical foundation and systematic professional knowledge of the discipline, and have systematic and in-depth professional knowledge and ability in a special research direction; have a solid sociological foundation and broad knowledge horizon, and master the basic theories of Chinese and foreign sociology.

3Can use modern scientific research methods and means, independently engage in scientific research, and achieve creative results in science or expertise;

4Have good writing skills and international academic communication skills;

5Physical and mental health.

3.Length of study

The full-time study period for an academic master's degree is 3 years.

4.Specific Requirements for Master's Degree Training

(1)The tutorial responsibility system is adopted in the training of master's degree students. The tutor should be a lecturer with master's degree or above. According to the need, a Master's Graduate Guidance Group (including Associate Professors and Lecturers of Master's Degree) headed by a Master's Tutor can be formed, which is responsible for the training and assessment of Master's Graduates.

(2)Thesis qualification examination of master’s degree graduates:

The qualification of master's thesis is examined by the Dean of the Department of Educational Affairs and the department in charge.

Basic requirements:

① All required courses and credits must be completed obtained.

② Completed topic selection report for master's thesis.

Contents to be included in the report of topic selection of master's thesis:

① The origin of proposed the proposed study, theoretical significance and practical value of the topic selection.

② The general situation of the research domestically and internationally, including achievements, problems, causes and development trends.

③ Research ideas and main research contents or framework.

④ Difficulties, key points and innovations in the research.

⑤ Relevant work completed in the paper qualification assessment.

⑥ Main reference papers.

(3)Mid-term progress report

Progress reports should be screened in the fourth semester for postgraduates, and then it can be used in the following thesis writing.

(4)Dissertation

① Thesis selection should belong to a basic research or applied research subject in the relevant research direction of the discipline, which has great theoretical significance or application value, and has important academic significance or application value for the development of the discipline;

② The content of the thesis should reflect the author’s broad basic theory and systematic in-depth expertise in sociology, and a broad understanding of the frontier trends and development trends in the research field. The paper should have the author's own creative thinking, and the main research results should be innovative.

③ The paper should be systematic and complete, clear in expression, rigorous in argumentation, accurate and comprehensive in citation and standardized in writing.


Master's Degree Admissions Guide

1.Recruitment Plans

In 2019, the enrollment plans of the first-level sociology master's degree program and the second-level social security master's degree program for international students in our institute have all adopted the "application assessment system" to enroll students.

2.Basic Conditions for Candidates to Enroll in the "Application and Assessment System"

(1)Applicants for Master level degrees must have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree and be under the age of 35.

(2)Master’s Degree applicants should be full-time undergraduate students of high-quality universities or high-level majors.

(3)Applicants must have good English skills. Priority is given to applicants who have achieved good scores in TOEFL, IELTS or other officially recognized exams and have obtained a language proficiency certificate.

3.Application Procedures

(2)Upload all the required documents and submit your Application.

*Note:Application materials must be authentic and accurate. Once fraud is found, candidates' enrollment admissions and degree application qualifications will be cancelled.


Required Documents:

① The application information form for masters printed on from the internet;

② Passport, copies of diploma and diploma certificate of undergraduate need to be provided by former students, and undergraduate certificate need to be provided by current students;

③ Academic transcripts of undergraduate courses;

④ Copies of proof of foreign language proficiency;

⑤ Previous students must submit bachelor's degree thesis, current students submit the opening report of bachelor's degree thesis, or the first draft of degree thesis, or the progress of research work;

⑥ Representative research results, such as copies of publicly published academic papers or other supporting materials for major research results;

⑦ Scientific research plan to be carried out during the period of studying for master's degree;

⑧ Two letters of recommendation from tutors/professors.

(4)Subject Evaluation:

The International Student Assessment Team (consisting of 5 to 7 teachers from different disciplines, which can be overlapped with the members of the Admission Committee, to be established) will conduct the subject assessment for the qualified candidates. The assessment is divided into the practical application ability test of foreign language and the comprehensive ability test of scientific research.

Examinations should be conducted in standardized examination rooms, and candidates who cannot arrive to the examination rooms can be interviewed/assessed by video. The examination process should be strictly recorded and video recorded for reference.

Subject assessment is divided into foreign language proficiency assessment (20%) and scientific research comprehensive ability assessment (80%).

Interview is the method to assess the comprehensive ability of scientific research. Candidates should introduce their basic information, the work results of their master's stage research/thesis/ degree qualification, the existing scientific research foundation, the research plan proposal for the duration of the master's degree program, etc., no more than 15 minutes; the comprehensive interview of the admission committee lasts about 15 minutes, mainly examining the candidates' scientific research ability and comprehensive potential. Examiners mark candidates anonymously.

(5)Admission

The International Student Admissions Committee of our college will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the candidates' application materials and assessment results. Only with the consent of more than two-thirds of all members, can a decision be made to recommend admission. Once qualified for admission, the college selection list? will be publicized by the school, and the online system will send admission tips. After confirmation of the payment, the school will send the admission notice and visa application form in about 10 working days.
